The International Cricket Council (ICC) has declared a strong ultimatum to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), granting an additional 24 hours to confirm the national team’s travel to India.
Once again, the global governing body has rejected BCB’s request to relocate its group stage fixtures of the T20 World Cup 2026 from India to Sri Lanka.
The ICC board meeting held on Wednesday (January 21, 2026) has confirmed that no changes will be made to the existing schedule of the tournament. This means Bangladesh is likely to face potential elimination from the event by refraining from traveling to India.
Cut-off Date Extended Until January 22 for BCB
The ICC board meeting, attended by the directors of full-member nations, demanded replacing Bangladesh, which has been reluctant to play in India.
With the clock ticking, ICC demanded that BCB confirm its decision by January 22. So far, the national team’s tour to India for the upcoming high-profile tournament remains uncertain.
Surprisingly, Pakistan was the only one among those 15 directors that extended its support towards Bangladesh.
As per the latest reports, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) requested a written request to the ICC, supporting Bangladesh’s appeal to relocate its T20 World Cup matches outside India.
Scotland Likely to Replace Bangladesh
If BCB remains adamant with its stance of refusing its players travel to India, Bangladesh will no longer feature in Group C of the tournament. In other words, Scotland, as the highest-ranked non-qualified team of the current T20I standings, will replace Bangladesh.
Group C would comprise teams like the West Indies, England, Italy, Nepal, and Scotland, potentially replacing Bangladesh.
Notably, Scotland narrowly missed out on a spot for the prestigious tournament through the European Qualifier after ranking behind the Netherlands, Italy, and Jersey.
‘Not Feasible to Make Changes’: ICC Latest Statement
Any decision taken would certainly impact the consequences of core events in Asia. ICC released a bold statement by confirming that all the matches of the T20 World Cup 2026 would be played as per the current schedule:
“Yes! All the matches of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 will proceed as per the schedule. Bangladesh should play all its matches in India.
After considering all the security measures along with the independent reviews, this decision was taken as there is no threat to the Bangladesh players, fans, or media persons across all venues in India.
ICC is conscious of not making any alterations to the tournament’s schedule under any circumstances. With a few days left for the commencement, any sudden changes, despite the absence of any valid security threat, could threaten the future ICC events and vandalize its neutrality as a global governing body,” ICC’s recent statement clarified.
BCB President Requests ICC To Give Some Time
Animul Islam, the current BCB president, requested ICC to grant some extra time to discuss with the Bangladesh government before making any decision:
“See! What they said was extremely valid, and they gave me 24 to 48 hours to come up with a final decision. We don’t want to pressure the government.
At the same time, we are aware that India is not at all a secure place for us to travel. So, we remain strong with our stance that we want to play in Sri Lanka.
Although ICC denied, we will discuss with the government once again and clarify to ICC about the government’s feedback,” Animul said.
Main Reason for Bangladesh to Refuse Playing in India
The entire controversy started when the Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman was released from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Upon the directives received by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) released Mustafizur Rahman, who was the only Bangladeshi player to participate in the league.
As a counterattacking response, Bangladesh suspended broadcasting IPL matches in the nation and denied its players from traveling to India for the T20 World Cup 2026.
With the tournament’s schedule fixed, ICC has no plans of shifting Bangladesh’s matches to Sri Lanka, as the co-hosts of the tournament will organize selective matches, including the high-octane India vs Pakistan clash.
Overall Verdict
As the T20 World Cup 2026 approaches, the entire cricket world is eager to know the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s final decision.
Considering the bilateral relationships and future scope of ICC events in Asian countries, the unexpected results or actions could jeopardize the tournament’s success.
With Bangladesh mandated to feature in India’s hosted group stage matches, the BCB is left with two options— either play in India or get replaced by Scotland in Group C.
