On 21st July 2024 (Sunday), the Jaffna Kings secured a massive victory in the LPL 2024 finals against Galle Marvels. Rilee Rossouw’s century and captain Kusal Mendis’s half-century steered Jaffna Kings to its fourth title win in the fifth edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL).
At one stage, it seemed like Galle Marvels would clinch their maiden LPL trophy by posting a total of 184-6 in 20 overs, batting first at R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. But, a strong partnership between Rossouw and Mendis easily chased down the target of 185 runs and helped their team achieve a 9-wicket win with 20 balls to spare.
Dwaine Pretorius gave a promising start to Galle Marvels as an opening bowler by dismissing Pathum Nissanka off the first ball, who was caught behind the stumps by Niroshan Dickwella. But, his efforts were shortlived as Jaffna Kings completely dominated during the 2nd innings and the match proved to be one-sided.
Interestingly, Rilee Rossouw received both the awards — Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament, for his exceptional performance throughout this season as well as in the finals.
Let’s find out how Kusal Mendis’s led side succeeded in lifting the LPL 2024 trophy as well as the interesting stats, award winners, and prize money in detail…
Jaffna Kings Story in Winning the LPL 2024 Trophy: Strongest batting performance to become the winners
Here’s a glance at how Jaffna Kings emerged as the LPL 2024 winners by defeating Galle Marvels in the finals:
1. Early Dismissal of Marvels Opening Batters:
Opting to bowl first, the medium pacer Jason Behrendorff (2-18 in 4 overs) provided a great start for Jaffna Kings. He dismissed Galle Marvels’ opening batters Alex Hales (6 runs from 9 balls) and Niroshan Dickwella (5 runs from 8 balls) at an early stage to make the new batters find it difficult to settle on the crease.
2. Asitha Fernando’s impressive bowling performance:
The 26-year-old right-arm medium pacer Asitha Fernando’s excellent 4-over spell of 3-35 includes the crucial wickets of these three batters namely:
- Tim Seifert: 47 runs from 37 balls (including 2 fours and 4 sixes) at a strike rate of 127.03
- Janith Liyanage: 7 runs from 8 balls (including 1 four)
- B Rajapaksa: 82 runs from 34 balls (including 8 fours and 2 sixes)
At 24-3 in 6.5 overs, it seemed challenging for Galle Marvels to cross the 100-run-mark. But, the 62-run partnership between Seifert and Rajapaksa anchored the team’s innings to reach a total of 182 in 20 overs.
3. Kusal Mendis and Rilee Rossouw’s 185-run Partnership:
Despite the early dismissal of Pathum Nissanka, who got out for a golden duck, Kusal Mendis and Rilee Rossouw kept fighting till the end without even losing a wicket to chase a target of 185 runs.
Rilee Rossouw’s blistering knock of 53-ball-106 runs (including 9 fours and 7 sixes) at a strike rate of 200 made the chase easier for Jaffna Kings. Additionally, Kusal Mendis’s supportive innings of 40-ball-72-runs (including 8 fours and 2 sixes) at a strike rate of 180.00 made it difficult for the bowlers of Marvels to grab wickets. As a result, these duo batters chased the target of 185 runs within 15.4 overs to help Jaffna win the LPL title for the fourth time out of the five seasons.
