Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) star all-rounder Andre Russell declared that he would retire from international cricket in the upcoming 20-over series against Australia. As the West Indies are scheduled to play five T20I matches in the bilateral series at home, the 37-year-old will announce a goodbye after the second match at the Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica.
Earlier, the Caribbean star hinted at the chances of playing the approaching 10th edition of the T20 World Cup in 2026. But, it seems that the key player of the West Indies squad has alternative plans and took this decision seven months before the ICC’s high-profile tournament.
The latest reports leave fans worried whether Russell would continue playing T20 leagues, particularly the next 19th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2026.
Will Russell Continue to Play for the Knight Riders Franchise in T20 Leagues?
Notably, Russell will be retiring only from international cricket. So, he would certainly continue as a valuable player for the Knight Riders franchise that owns these teams in IPL, CPL, ILT20, and MLC:
- Kolkata Knight Riders (Indian Premier League)
- Los Angeles Knight Riders (Major League Cricket)
- Trinbago Knight Riders (Caribbean Premier League)
- Abu Dhabi Knight Riders (International League T20)
In addition, the dynamic Windies all-rounder features in other T20 leagues such as the Big Bash League (BBL), Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), Lanka Premier League (LPL), and The Hundred.
Is Russell Following Nicholas Pooran’s Retirement Trend?
As Andre Russell continues to participate in franchise T20 leagues, he becomes the second noteworthy cricketer from the West Indies to announce adieu to international cricket, with the 29-year-old Nicholas Pooran recently announcing his retirement.
Russell didn’t give the exact reason behind his retirement decision. But, it seems to follow Pooran’s footsteps so that he could ensure his long-term presence in franchise cricket.
Andre Russell’s Emotional Note to Cricket West Indies
Recently, Andre Russell expressed his thankfulness to the Cricket West Indies (CWI), saying that he was proud of wearing the maroon color national team’s jersey for more than a decade:
“Yes! I cannot explain in words how proud the achievement in my life representing the West Indies. During my childhood days, I didn’t expect to reach this level. But you will love the sport once you start to play more. Then you will be able to realize your achievements.
The inspiration during those days went on to become better as I wanted to establish a mark wearing the maroon color jersey and become an encouraging example to others,” Russell told CWI.
Andre Russell to Play His Last International Game at Home
Out of 5 T20I matches against Australia, Andre Russell will feature in the first two clashes at Sabina Park, which is indeed his homeground in Jamaica. He will play his last international game on July 22 (Tuesday) and will not travel with the Windies squad to St Kitts for the remaining three T20Is.
Here’s what the Jamaican cricketer had to say about playing cricket matches in front of his home crowd:
“Yeah! I enjoyed playing for the West Indies. Especially, I loved playing matches at home, particularly in front of my friends and family members, as it was an opportunity for me to highlight my talents and put forward top-quality performances.
Most importantly, I want to conclude my international career on a high note, so that the next generation of cricketers will consider me as a role model when coming out to represent Caribbean,” Russell voiced his sentiments.
