It has been learned that the pacer Mohammed Siraj will be joining in as a replacement for Harshit Rana, who has now been ruled out of the tournament after suffering a knee injury in the warm-up match against South Africa in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Team India pace bowler Harshit Rana has been ruled out of the forthcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, as he suffered a knee injury while playing in the recent warm-up match against South Africa on February 4, 2026, in Navi Mumbai.
“The BCCI medical team and other specialists have conducted evaluations and confirmed that Harshit Rana is not fit to play in the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup tournament. Team India wishes him to recover soon, but till the,n Mohammed Siraj will be taking over that place in the squad,” the statement added.
Fitness Blow Deepens Team India Concerns as Harshit Rana Exits and Mohammed Siraj Brings Experience
The 24-year-old Delhi pacer was able to bowl just one over in the warm-up stage, which cost him 16 runs, and did not contribute further to the game. Earlier in the game, Rana also got a chance to bat for the Men in Blue and faced a single ball in the game. With doubts already surrounding the fitness of spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar, the exit of Rana has simply increased the concern for the Men in Blue, the defending champions, ahead of the big event in the Caribbean.
Till now, Rana has represented Men in Blue in nine matches of T20Is. In these matches, the bowling all-rounder has scored 57 runs at an average of 28.5. His highest score achieved is 35 runs. Rana has grabbed 9 wickets at an average of 33.0, where his highest achievement is 3/33.

On the other hand, India’s Test cricket regular, Siraj, had last represented India in a T20I against Sri Lanka in the southern garrison town of Pallekele back in July 2024. He has picked up 14 wickets from 16 matches with an average of 32.28, an economy rate of 7.79, and best bowling figures of 4/17.
The updated squad for India:

- Ishan Kishan (WK)
- Tilak Varma
- Hardik Pandya
- Shivam Dube
- Axar Patel (VC)
- Rinku Singh
- Jasprit Bumrah

Washington Sundar is about to join the Indian squad
At the same time, there has been no update on the condition of the injured Washington Sundar. He is currently undergoing treatment for his side strain at the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s ‘Center of Excellence’ in Bengaluru.
However, the cricketer was not included in the photoshoot organized by the ICC just before the commencement of the T20 World Cup, as captain Surya Kumar Yadav stated that he would wait for the all-rounder to attain full fitness. Currently, the cricketer is batting, but there has been no update on him from the BCCI.
However, in the meantime, Suryakumar has also revealed that Ishan Kishan will open the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma. Sanju Samson failed to assert his authority in the New Zealand series, which caused him to sit on the bench once again. According to sources, Sanju Samson had failed to practice even his batting on the eve of India’s opening match against the USA on February 7.
BCCI Confirms Harshit Rana Ruled Out of T20 World Cup 2026 Due to Knee Injury
“Harshit Rana, the Indian team’s pace bowler, is likely to be ruled out of the forthcoming 2026 ICC T20 World Cup due to his severe knee injury. This injury occurred while he was warming up for the match against South Africa on 04 February 2026, at Navi Mumbai. The BCCI team discovered this after speaking with a qualified expert who suggested that the cricketer was not fit to play in the tournament. However, the Indian squad desires that Harshit get well soon!” says the BCCI press release.
ICC Quotes Team India Captain on Squad Combinations Amid Harshit Rana, Sundar Concerns
While referring to the query about the possibility of Harshit Rana not being included to compete in the tournament and the unknown fitness status of Washington Sundar, the T20I captain of the Indian cricket team has made an elegant statement, which stated, “Don’t worry, we have 11 players ready for tomorrow. But the big blow is obvious. If you have to make a combination of 15 players. You make it with combinations in mind. We made it with combinations in mind. He wasn’t there, so we made it, and if he is not available for us moving forward, then we will see other combinations. But we have combinations, we have enough players for all the combinations of the teams that we can assemble for the tournament. But if we don’t have him, we will definitely miss him,” as stated by the ICC.
Final Thoughts
If Team India had to suffer such a jolt, the timing could not have been worse, with just days remaining for the commencement of the T20 World Cup 2026. The loss of a young pacer like Harshit Rana is a setback, no doubt, but Mohammed Siraj coming in brings experience and control that is so essential to have in any bowling unit.
With a strong core, flexible combinations, and inspired performances from senior players, India will look forward to getting beyond this disruption. How quickly the team adjusts to these changes could be an important determining factor in the contours of their World Cup campaign.
