Following Bangladesh’s boycott from the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, Pakistan is reported to forfeit its group stage match against its arch-rivals, India.
Omitting India’s fixture would cause only a 2-point loss for Pakistan. But the International Cricket Council (ICC) could face massive financial losses.
As the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) denied its players’ travel to India, the global governing body took a last-minute decision to announce Scotland as the replacement.
However, ICC is all set to impose a never before severe sanctions that can potentially sideline the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) from the international landscape.
ICC’s Ultimatum to Pakistan: T20 World Cup Withdrawal Threat
The relationship between ICC and PCB has almost reached the breaking point. These sanctions will become effective only if Pakistan pulls out of the T20 World Cup:
- NO Objection Certificates (NOCs) denied for overseas players to participate in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
- PCB’s reduced funding from ICC.
- Omitting Pakistan from future editions of the Asia Cups.
- All bilateral series featuring Pakistan will be suspended.
- Diminished recognition as a full-member nation in international cricket.
- No commercial support from top-tier companies for the PSL.
Despite ICC accepting Pakistan’s demands and allowing it to play its matches in a neutral venue, a boycott against India could impact PCB’s long-term success in the sport.
Pakistan to Keep Its Options Open For T20 World Cup 2026
It was reported that the PCB currently wanted to keepitsr options open for the tournament. While withdrawal from the tournament involves a high level of risk, forfeiting its group stage fixture against India could be an alternative.
Withdrawing their match against India could cause severe financial loss to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as well. Also, it could ruin Pakistan’s reputation in global cricket rankings.
PCB Chairman Furious About Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup Exit
Mohsin Naqvi, the PCB Chairman, alleged ICC’s double standards and believes that Bangladesh was treated unfairly:
“See! The way Bangladesh was treated was totally unfair. This was the same statement I said during the ICC’s board of meeting.
The double standards are not at all acceptable, where one country can make the decision it wants and do injustice to the other nation.
Bangladesh should have been allowed to play the World Cup at any cost. They are indeed a core participant, and such unequal treatment should not be done.
Likewise to Pakistan, Bangladesh is a full-member nation. And we are clear with our stance that when you do a favor to India by relocating its fixtures from Pakistan, then the same should have been done with Bangladesh.
Most importantly, one nation should not dictate its terms and conditions to another. If such dictation is repeated, then Pakistan needs to reconsider its participation and will adhere to its stance,” Naqvi said.
PCB Waits for Pakistan Government’s Decision
Mohsin Naqvi said that the national team’s participation will depend on the decision taken by the Pakistan government. Here is what the 47-year-old said when asked about Pakistan’s perspective on playing the T20 World Cup 2026 after the ICC rejected Bangladesh’s appeal:
“Yeah! As of now, our honorable Prime Minister [Shehbaz Sharif] is not in the nation. The final decision will be taken after our PM returns to the country,” Naqvi added.
Wasim Akram Against Pakistan’s T20 World Cup Boycott
Amidst the increasing reports of Pakistan pulling out of the T20 World Cup, the former Pakistani pacer Wasim Akram voiced his disappointment. The 59-year old feels that there was no role for PCB to focus on this matter:
“No! I don’t understand what is the necessity for Pakistan to boycott the T20 World Cup when Bangladesh is unwilling to play. My question is what Bangladesh has done for Pakistan Cricket? There was no need to take this matter seriously.
With the T20 World Cup approaching sooner, Pakistan cricket should have shifted its focus on performing well and winning the trophy rather than involving in unnecessary controversies,” Wasim said.
Final Verdict
Pakistan will start their T20 World Cup campaign on February 07 (Wednesday), followed by their subsequent clash against the USA. However, their highly anticipated fixture against India is scheduled to take place on February 15. The men-in-green will conclude its group stages against Namibia on February 18.
Suppose the former champions withdraw their match against India; they would be under pressure to win all their matches in the group stage to qualify for the Super Eights.
After the fueling discussions about the potential boycott, ICC issued a stern warning to the Pakistan Cricket Board. So, it is unlikely that Pakistan could release yet another shocking news. With less than 10 days left for the T20 World Cup 2026 to start, Mohsin Naqvi clarified that the PCB, following the Pakistan government directives, will reveal its final decision by next Monday (February 02).
