Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, dream of making a Big Bash League (BBL) debut in the 2025-26 season is now in doubt. The 39-year-old had an opportunity to become the most high-profile Indian cricketer to feature in Australia’s franchise T20 league.
A knee injury has drawn curtains to Ashwin’s plans to play BBL representing the Sydney Thunder. He was indeed the first ever capped Indian player who was all set to feature in this highly prestigious league. But the veteran all-rounder injured his knee during a preparatory camp, thereby prompting a much-needed surgery.
Ashwin’s Emotional Note To All Fans
Ravichandran Ashwin took to his social media, sharing an emotional note to express his regret of missing out on the opportunity to play for Sydney Thunder in BBL 2025-26:
“Deep Regrets!
Dear Thunder Nation! I wanted to convey to myself that I hurt my knee during a practice session in Chennai. Having undergone certain procedures and based on the outcome, I might miss the BBL 15.
It’s tough to say, but I had high hopes and was excited to be a part of this group. Currently, I should focus on the rehab, recovery, and work on my fitness to bounce back stronger.
All I have felt is Trent’s warmth as well as the support from players and staff, ever since my first conversation with the club. I wholeheartedly thank you all for showing immense love and support towards me before I had bowled a single ball for the franchise.
No matter if it is odd hours (in Chennai), I will watch the match and cheer for both our men’s and women’s teams. Suppose rehab and travel plans coincide, and if the doctors are satisfied with my recovery, I would just say hello in person and be around later in this season.
I wish that the ENGIE stadium is fully packed, and the noise levels are always up,” Ashwin tweeted on his X handle.
Sydney Thunder’s GM Hopes Ashwin’s Presence in the Dugout
Trent Copeland, the General Manager (GM) of the Sydney Thunder franchise, urged Ravichandran Ashwin to ensure his presence in the dugout for the forthcoming season:
“Unfortunately! Every individual of the Sydney Thunder felt heartbroken upon knowing Ash’s knee injury.
Right from our first chat with Ashwin, his commitment to represent Thunder was clear and uncompromising. We hope to welcome him into our dugout for the remainder of the BBL 15. We want our fans to get familiarized with him as the Thunder’s reliable player, which indeed helps us to build a long-term relationship with him,” Trent Copeland said.
A Dream that Remains Unfulfilled For Ashwin
As BBL 15 is set to commence on December 14, where Perth Scorchers will face off against Sydney Sixers, Ravichandran Ashwin’s dream to make a debut in Australia’s cash-rich T20 league remains incomplete.
In other words, the experienced cricketer has no choice left rather than compromise his goal of becoming a global T20 player for the next few months.
The Tamil Nadu-born cricketer had plans to represent different franchises in foreign T20 leagues and wished to be a part of The Hundred and SA20 after retiring from international cricket.
After going unsold in the International League Twenty20 (ILT20) auction, Ashwin had set his focus on representing the Sydney-based franchise. Most importantly, he revealed not to have any regret about having missed out on any opportunity after stepping down from his cricketing career.
As there is no timeline fixed for the spin bowling all-rounder’s recovery, Ashwin is certain to experience a delay for his maiden BBL season.
Earlier, the former spin bowler was supposed to participate in the Hong Kong sixes scheduled between November 07 and November 09. Due to the medical procedures, he has now been sidelined from the tournament, with Robin Uthappa being appointed as his replacement.
Is Sydney Thunder’s Squad Balanced Despite Ashwin’s Absence?
Regardless of Ravichandran Ashwin’s absence, Sydney Thunder boasts a formidable batting line-up featuring dynamic players in the squad like Sam Konstas, Lockie Ferguson, Tim David, Sam Billings, Cameron Bancroft, and several others.
So, it is understood that the franchise still boasts a higher chance of accomplishing its second BBL title. However, Ashwin’s experience and skills could have strengthened the team’s spin bowling department.
Nevertheless, this injury is yet another challenge to test Ashwin’s resilience in a new phase of his T20 career. So, it is a new beginning and not an abrupt end.
Sydney Thunder start their campaign on December 16, which is a rematch of the grand finale against Hobart Hurricanes. The franchise hopes Ashwin’s support both on and off the field will help to build a strong relationship on a long-term basis.
Conclusively, the cricket followers across the world will closely observe the remarkable comeback of Ashwin in his cricketing journey and accomplish his long-standing dream of playing multiple franchise T20 leagues worldwide.
