Sunny Dhillon 6-Year BAN! A Big Message To Stakeholders

The ICC’s anti-corruption code is to be strictly followed, which Sunny Dhillon, the former coach of Pune Devils in the Abu Dhabi T10 league, had breached. Due to a match-fixing scandal, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has banned him for 6 years.

Sunny Dhillon was amongst the 8 persons who violated the anti-corruption code of the ICC during the Abu Dhabi T10 Cricket League in 2021. They were accused of having tried to influence and alter the outcome of matches.

Earlier Allegation of Sunny Dhillon’s Unethical Behavior.

On 13th September 2023, Sunny Dhillon was charged along with 7 others for trying to manipulate the match results.

Later, the ICC (International Cricket Council) and DACO (Designated Anti-Corruption Official) for the Emirates Cricket Board tracked down these cheating activities. They immediately got involved during the tournament and warned him by imposing a fine.

3 Violations were identified against Sunny Dhillon.

A thorough investigation was conducted against Sunny Dhillon in the court of justice confirmed his violation. It is said that he had violated 3 articles of the ECB (Emirates Cricket Board), which is the governing body of cricket in the United Arab Emirates. The violations of the Anti-Corruption Code include:

The ban was made effective from an earlier date, i.e., 13th September 2023 when Sunny Dhillon was temporarily suspended. And, this decision of the ECB reflects their strong stance on maintaining the authenticity and truthfulness of cricket by terminating corrupt practices.

However, the timely acts of the ICC (International Cricket Council) and DACO (Designated Anti-Corruption Official) prevented corrupt activities. And, their efforts are evident by their strict scrutiny and strong regulation of anti-corruption measures and safeguards in cricket.

Others Charged along with Sunny Dhillon.

At that time, others charged along with Sunny Dhillon included the 2 co-owners of the Pune Devils franchise namely:

  1. Krishan Kumar Chaudhary
  2. Parag Sanghvi

In addition, it had the names of 2 domestic players and their batting coach, Ashar Zaidi. Moreover, Shadab Ahamed, the team manager of the Pune Devils franchise was also charged with allegations.

Earlier this year January, Bangladesh all-rounder Nasir Hossain was banned for a period of 2 years. He was also among the 8 individuals who were charged for violating the anti-corruption code. Similarly, three others were handed a ban in August 2024 for match-fixing in the Abu Dhabi T10 League that includes the names of:

  3. Krishan Kumar Chaudhary

Sunny Dhillon’s Ban: A Strong Message to Many!

The ICC’s decision to ban Sunny Dhillon for 6 years showcases the seriousness and sincerity of cricket governing bodies in dealing with corruption.

In addition, this ban is indeed a strong message to many of them, including the stakeholders. It reflects that these governing bodies of cricket will be taking severe action against any individual for violation of regulation.
