T20 World Cup 2026 Final: India Creates History After Third Title Win – Award Winners and Prize Money

India

Team India created history with a 96-run triumph over New Zealand in the T20 World Cup 2026 final.

The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday night (March 08) witnessed Suryakumar Yadav and his men break multiple jinxes to lift the highly coveted trophy for the third time.

Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan’s half centuries bolstered India’s total to 255/5 in 20 overs. Notably, the in-form opening batter Sanju Samson’s third consecutive 50-plus knock added with the pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah’s 4-fer turned the match to a one-sided domination.

New Zealand Captain’s Blunder After Winning Toss

Mitchell Santner, the New Zealand skipper preferred to chase targets in high pressure matches hoping for dew to favor in evening matches. In contrast to the expectations, his plans backfired against a highly explosive batting side like India that posted a mammoth 250+ score on a red-soil wicket.

Indian Batting Line-Up Follow Sanju Samson’s Aggressive Approach

Once again Sanju Samson proved his worth as the best reliable opener in T20 format by scoring three consecutive fifties in the tournament.

The Kerala born batter amassed 89 runs off 46 balls (including 5 fours and 8 sixes) at a strike rate of 193.48. He built a solid 98-run opening partnership with Abhishek Sharma, who scored a quickfire 52-run knock off 21 balls (including 6 fours and 3 sixes)

Samson set a foundation for the Indian batting line-up to carry forward with the aggressive approach. As a result, Ishan Kishan rediscovered his red-hot form scoring 25-ball-54-run knock (including 4 fours and 4 sixes).

Ultimately, Shivam Dube’s unbeaten cameo of 8-ball-26 runs (including 3 fours and 2 sixes) bolstered India to their highest ever score in the history of the T20 World Cup final.

Seifert and Santner’s Knock Not Enough To Chase Massive Target

Tim Seifert started his innings on an explosive note having scored 52 runs off 26 balls (including 2 fours and 5 sixes). However, Varun Chakaravarthy (1/39 in 3 overs) cut-short the Kiwi opener’s stay at the crease before converting his start into a high-scoring knock.

Mitchell Santner’s 43-run knock off 35 balls (including 3 fours and 2 sixes) at the lower-order came up in a losing cause. Lack of intentful contributions from the other top and middle order batters resulted in New Zealand to succumb to 159/10 in 19 overs.

Noteworthy Bowling Figures of Indian and New Zealand Bowlers

Jasprit Bumrah’s 4/15 in 4 overs lead the Indian pace bowling attack from the front, while spinner Axar Patel (3/27 in 3 overs) bagged three crucial wickets of Finn Allen (9 runs), Glenn Phillips (5 runs), and Daryl Mitchell (17 runs).

Considering the Kiwis bowling line-up’s performance, James Neesham (3/46 in 3 overs) bagged 3 core wickets of Sanju Samson (89 runs), Ishan Kishan (54 runs) and Suryakumar Yadav (0) in a single over.

4 Impossible Jinx That India Broke to Lift T20 World Cup 2026 Trophy

  1. First Team to Win Three T20WC Trophies:
    • India: 3 Trophies (2007, 2024, and 2026)
    • England: 2 Trophies (2010, and 2022)
    • West Indies: 2 Trophies (2012, and 2016)
  2. An End to Winless Streak Against New Zealand in T20WCs:
    • India’s Record Before Final: 0-3
    • India’s Record After Final: 1-3 (First Win against New Zealand in T20 World Cups)
  3. Defending the T20WC Crown at Home: So far in the T20 World Cup history, India became the only team to defend the T20 World Cup title at home. This is a rare feat that no team has ever achieved so far.
  4. Winning Two Consecutive ICC T20WC Titles: India has rewritten history by becoming the first team to win back-to-back T20WC titles. Teams like England (2010, and 2022) and West Indies (2012 and 2016) haven’t won two consecutive T20 World Cup trophies.
