Why Babar Azam suddenly quit as Pakistan white-ball captain?

Babar Azam Pakistan white-ball captain

Finally, the Pakistani right-handed batsman Babar Azam steps down as the white ball captain of the national cricket team. On Wednesday (October 2), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) accepted Babar’s resignation and questioned the selection committee on who would be the next skipper.

Babar Azam was sacked as Pakistan’s limited-overs captain after the team’s disappointing campaign in the 2023 World Cup. However, within three months, the 29-year-old was once again reappointed ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024 and wasn’t successful in his second stint as Pakistan faced an early exit in the tournament’s group stages.

Moreover, it has become a common trend for the Pakistan cricket team to undergo huge changes frequently. Recently, the team lost the 2-match home test series against Bangladesh with a clean sweep of 0-2 under Shan Masood’s captaincy.

Babar Azam faced severe criticism about his form, and his future as a captain was being questioned. Notably, this is the 2nd time that in the past 10 months, he stepped down as the captain.

Meanwhile, the former South African cricketer Ab de Villiers defended Babar Azam’s decision by saying that he would accumulate huge runs for Pakistan after being relieved from the captaincy duty. Similarly, the PCB praised Babar’s skills and the dedication he showed in developing Pakistan cricket.

PCB’s Latest Statement about Babar Azam’s Resignation as White Ball Captain

The PCB responded to Babar Azam’s resignation and explained that he received the Board’s complete support as the white-ball captain and at the same time respected his decision:

“Yeah! Even though the PCB supported Babar Azam as the limited-overs captain, his decision to step down highlights his intention to concentrate more on becoming a quality player. This decision is a tribute to his dedication and uncompromised commitment to the team. Furthermore, the PCB continues to support Azam by recognizing his potential to offer his best abilities as a world-class batsman and senior player of the team in shorter formats,” the PCB said in a statement.

Reasons why Babar Azam Stepped down as Limited Overs Captain

Unfortunately, there have been many disappointments in Pakistan team performances. And, all this had been occurring one after the other under Babar Azam’s captaincy. Especially, it was observed in most of the primary tournaments, and it led to his stepping down from captaincy.

Although, Babar Azam had a prosperous career and tenure as Pakistan captain, the T20 World Cup 2024 had a major impact on evaluating his leadership.

It was clearly evident that Babar himself struggled to find his form and faced a drop in his performances, which led him to think about his roles, responsibilities, and duties.

Regarding the above scenarios, Babar Azam went on to post his decision on X and confirmed about having informed the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) and team management a month ago.

Currently, Pakistan is preparing for the 3-match home test series against England starting from October 7. However, the entire team has a busy schedule in the white ball cricket for the next six months starting with the Australian tour in November that consists of 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is.
